Biografie

Jana Verboom had 30 years of experience at Wageningen Environmental Research (Alterra) on various subjects, before she joined the ESA team. She did her PhD on habitat fragmentation and had combined her knowledge on spatial population dynamics and population viability – and biodiversity in general - with knowledge of environmental change in several projects on nature conservation under environmental change. She also became interested in the many functions nature has for humans, including positive effects on our health and wellbeing, and studied these effects in an intervention study. More recent projects were dealing with impacts of renewable energy production on animal populations, e.g. wind turbine collisions of birds (and bats). Jana Verboom has a broad interest in issues dealing with the environment, environmental change, biodiversity, and complex socio-ecological systems.

Jana Verboom is seeking MSc thesis students for the following topics:

  • Nature-based solutions for present and future urban challenges
  • The multiple benefits of (urban) green infrastructure
  • Positive effects of nature on human physical and mental health (Green for Gray project)
  • Pests in urban areas (possibly with GGD Amsterdam)
  • Threats to biodiversity of climate change, combined effect of fragmentation and climate change
  • Habitat destruction and modelling global biodiversity in relation to habitat patch size (GLOBIO)
  • General Environmental Quality/Environmental Systems issues
