Expert Profile
Expertise
Abilities
  • Stefan van Leeuwen is senior scientist at the RIKILT -Wageningen University & Research. He was trained as analytical chemist and has an interest in the development of analytical methods for environmental contaminants (e.g. bisphenol A and related substances, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs), brominated flame retardants (BFRs), perfluorinated alkylated substances (PFASs).
  • He recently embarked in the field of food processing contaminants, such as acrylamide, 3-MCPD, 2-MCPD and glycidol, as well as advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs). He's coordinating a 4 year multipartner project on mitigation strategies for MCPD-esters and glycidylesters, aiming at reduction of these contaminants while maintaining the quality of the vegetable oil.
  • He has been coordinating the production of (candidate) certified reference materials in the EU funded projects CHRONO, BROC and DIFFERENCE and he was responsible for the organization of the the first worldwide interlaboratory studies on PFASs in environmental samples. Furthermore, he has been acting as QA workpackage leader in the EU project PERFOOD and PERFORCE. He's currently the coordinator of the Dutch National Reference Laboratory on dioxins and PCBs.
  • He was seated in the EFSA Working group of the Panel on Contaminants in the Food Chain focusing on Brominated Flame Retardants (2009-2012), and was a member of the certification advisory panel (CAP) of the EU JRC Institute of Reference Materials and Measurements (2010-2016).
