Biography

Corné Rademaker (1989) studied Animal Sciences at Wageningen University and Philosophy at VU University Amsterdam. In November 2014, he started his PhD at PHI on the value of the Normative Practice Approach for understanding development cooperation, in particular in relation to agricultural and animal husbandry development in Sub-Sahara Africa.

PhD Project: Towards an understanding of development cooperation as a normative practice
A philosophical study into the use of the Normative Practice Approach for a normative view on development and development cooperation, in particular in the context of agriculture

This study focuses on the development of an intervention ethics for international development cooperation – with a special focus on agricultural development cooperation – which the Dutch Scientific Council for Governmental Policy defined as the systematic normative reflection on the question when or when not to intervene in development contexts. We do so through employing the Normative Practice Approach (NPA) which has emerged as a distinct approach to normative issues in professional practices. The NPA was developed by several Christian philosophers based on work of Herman Dooyeweerd and Alasdair MacIntyre. An important component of the study involves an appropriation of critical thinkers in the social sciences, such as Norman Long and David Mosse. By developing an understanding of agricultural development cooperation as a normative practice, we aim to avoid an understanding of agricultural development as just Westernization as well as a rejection of development cooperation as mere domination.
