Aafke studied a BSc in Food technology and MSc in Nutrition & Health. During her MSc she focussed on malnutrition in low- and middle-income countries with a thesis in India and internship in Ecuador. After her studies she worked in Ethiopia for the international NGO Nutrition International. Her career continued at the Centre of the Development Innovation at WUR, working in nutrition, agriculture and fisheries projects in multiple countries in Africa and Asia. She started working with the division of Human Nutrition at WUR in 2017, and started her PhD in December 2018.
