PhD Project: PrevPeck
Feather pecking behaviour is a serious problem that affects laying hens welfare and causes economical losses for the farmer. WUR researchers, together with industry and government intend to unravel the mechanisms that play a role in the physiological development of feather pecking in early pullets life. After the mechanisms are studied, it should become clear what the sensitive period for the development of this destructive behaviour is. In this sensitive period, nutritional interventions at early life are used to alter the mechanisms and prevent feather pecking in later life.
