Gastro-intestinal and respiratory disease in pigs are a major problem for animal welfare and contributes to huge economic losses in the pig industry. In addition, the reduction of antibiotic usage in the livestock sector underlines the importance for the development of novel strategies to enhance the resilience of animals against (infectious) diseases. One of these novel strategies is immunomodulation by feed in early life, as it is well established that early life conditions (i.e. diet) determines the immune status later in life. This multidisciplinary project aims to provide an integrated picture of the complex interactions between nutrition, microbiota and (mucosal) immunity in relation to animal health. Collaborators within this project include Utrecht University (Department of Infectious Diseases and Immunology) and Vereniging Diervoeders Nederland (VDN).
