Domenico Dentoni is Associate Professor in Sustainable Business in Agri-Food Systems at the Business Management & Organization Group of Wageningen University (The Netherlands).
Domenico’s research focuses on new forms of organization and organizing that trigger (or constrain) learning and change at individual and collective levels and thus address (or worsen) wicked problems around food and agriculture. He seeks to advance engaged scholarship as a scholarly practice of designing and conducting research with societal stakeholders such as companies, startups, civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, the public sector and social movements. Domenico's research methods are mostly inductive; research usually starts as qualitative to become quantitative as more insights are collected. His work has been recently published both in management and organization journals that discuss how to deal with sustaianbility issues (such as Journal of Business Venturing, Organization & Environment, Journal of Business Ethics, Business & Society) and outlets focusing on sustainable agriculture (such as Food Policy, Current Opinion on Environmental Sustainability, Agriculture & Human Values, Marine Policy, Journal of Cleaner Production).
Domenico has received research grants for a total of 2,4 Million between 2011 and 2020 at Wageningen University from the European Union (H2020), US Agency for International Development, ACIAR (Australia), CGIAR (Global), NWO and Dutch Embassy in Kenya (Netherlands), Proakademia (Poland/European Union) as well as private foundations in Ecuador and Italy. With these funds, 4 postdoc and 8 PhD positions were funded. He was co-founder of the Global Center for Food Systems Innovation (GCFSI) funded by (USAID) since 2012; principal investigator of the projects "Value Chain Innovation Platforms for Food Security (VIP4FS) funded by ACIAR (Australia) since 2016, "Organizing for SMAllholder REsilience" (OSMARE) funded by NWO (The Netherlands) since 2018 and "Entrepreneurial Learning in Inclusive Agribusiness" funded by NWO (The Netherlands) since 2019.
In terms of executive training and education, Domenico teaches participatory systems dynamics and value network analysis for organizational and systemic change. At Wageningen University, he founded the course on Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Emerging Economies at MSc and PhD levels - which was as well as Strategic Change Management. The courses he coordinates were awarded with the Excellent Education Award in 2016, 2018, and 2019, and he was longlisted as Best Teacher of the Year finalists in 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2020. In 2019, he was recognized among the '25 Leaders to Follow in Food and Agriculture' worldwide by the US-based non-governmental organization Food Tank.
