Biography

IInge D. Brouwer (Ph.D.) is Associate Professor at the Division of Human Nutrition and Health, Wageningen University. Inge D. Brouwer (Ph.D.) is Associate Professor at the Division of Human Nutrition, Wageningen University. Her research focuses on improvement of dietary quality of (young) women and children, in low and middle income countries through agricultural or food systems approaches, with special emphasis on reducing the burden of undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies and overnutrition. Dr. Brouwer has acquired many research funds, from national funding programmes, from EU FP6 and FP7 Framework Programmes as well as from food industries. At the moment she is leader of the Flagship Food Systems for Healthier Diets under the CGAIR funded Agriculture for Nutrition and Health research programme led by the International Food Policy Research Institute. This programme is carried out in collaboration with Bioversity International, CIAT, IFPRI, IITA in Bangladesh, Vietnam, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the aim to guide transformations of food systems toward healthier diets for poor populations in a sustainable and equitable way.

Increasing fruit and vegetable intake of low-income populations in Vietnam and Nigeria through food system innovations (2018-2021) BMGF

Overall Principle Investigator of the reseach programme, in collaboration with CIAT, Bioversity International, IFPRI and University of Ibandan (Nigeria) and National Nutrition Institute (NIN), Hanoi Medical School and Rikolto (Vietnam). The project is acrried out inrial, peri-urban and urban areas and consists of 3 interelated demand-side interventions addressing accessibility, affordabilityand acceptability of fruits and vegetables.

Food systems for healthier diets, Flagship research programme within CRP A4NH, CGIAR (2017 – present)

Flagship Leader responsible for the coordination of the research programme carried out in 4 focus countries (Ethiopia, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Vietnam) in collaboration with 5 CGIAR institutes.

Improved nutrition through staple food crops in Sub-Saharan Africa (INSTAPA) (2008 – 2013) EU FP7

Overall coordinator of the research programme comprising 7 workpackages. Co-supervisor of a randomized controlled trial studying the effect of daily consumption of biofortified yellow cassava on vitamin A status and immune function of Kenyan school children in one of the workpackages.

FONIO (2007-2012) EU-FP6

Leader of nutrition workpackage on upgrading quality and competitiveness of fonio for improved livelihoods in West-Africa

TELFUN (2007 - 2010) INREF – Wageningen University

Leader of nutrition workpackage on tailoring food sciences to endogenous patterns of local food suply for future nutrition in India, Equador and Ghana.
