    The experts in the panel seek to better understand the links between plant nutrition practices and sustainability outcomes, and to provide the scientific evidence to support a transition in practices to achieve these outcomes.

    Key actors from the science, policy and industry communities across Europe have established the EU Nitrogen Expert Panel. The general objective of the Expert Panel is to contribute to improving Nutrient Use Efficiency (NUE) in food systems in Europe, through: (i) communicating a vision and strategies on how to improve NUE in food systems in Europe; (ii) generating new ideas, and recommending effective proposals and solutions; and by (iii) acting as referee in controversial issues, and by communicating authoriatively.


My mission is to contribute to improving the sustainability and resilience of farming systems. This requires integrated assessment, considering impacts of different drivers (climate, policy, markets, technology) on different dimensions of sustainable development (economic, environmental, social, institutional) and resilience (robustness, adaptability, transformability). When addressing the farming system level, impacts from crop to global level are relevant. I use both quantitative and qualitative methods, including statistical analyses, crop modelling, bio-economic farm modelling, agent-based modelling, surveys, interviews and participatory approaches. Based on a description and explanation of current systems, future systems can be explored and designed. My vision is that agroecological and technological innovations should be accompanied by social and institutional changes to improve the sustainability and resilience of farming systems.

Current projects include SURE-Farm (SUstainable and Resilient EU FARMing systems;, PotatoGapNL (Yield gap analysis for sustainable potato production; and Digital Future Farm ( I am a member of the EU Nitrogen Expert Panel (, the Scientific Panel on Responsible Plant Nutrition (, and the core team of the WUR Strategic Investment theme Connected Circularity ( I am Editor of Agricultural Systems and in the Editorial Advisory Board of European Journal of Agronomy, Land Use Policy and Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems, section Climate-Smart Food Systems.
