She has several years of experience with rural and agricultural development in the Global South, especially East and Central Africa (Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, DRC, Burundi), and India.

Current research

Currently Mariette's research activities focus on digital innovations in agronomy and agricultural extension. She is specifically interested in the enactment of Human Centered Design processes and participatory research in the context of developing and implementing ICT technologies in agriculture. Another research interest is evidence of the working and impact of digital agricultural services in developing countries. Hence her PhD research studies design and implementation of digital interventions for agricultural extension and pest and disease management in African food crop systems. She does this in the context of the IITA led ICT4BXW project, which develops and studies a mobile phone based application and platform that should act as decision support system and early warning system for control and prevention of Xanthomonas Wilt of Banana disease in Rwanda.
