Dr. Kuijsten is a teacher/researcher at the Global Nutrition group of the Division of Human Nutrition, Wageningen University.
‘My current research focusses on the integration of healthy and sustainable diets for consumers. I contribute to the micro-level modelling of nutrient intakes, habitual dietary patterns and preferences of individual consumers (SUSFANS, SHARP-BASIC). Within this topic I supervise BSc, MSC, and PhD students. My future research aims to link the multidisciplinary fields of environmental sustainability, nutrition and chronic diseases, with a main interest in plant based diets and dietary quality.
During the previous years I have gained experience in nutritional exposure assessment, dietary intervention trials, and nutritional epidemiology. I obtained my MSc in Human Nutrition and Health at Wageningen University in 2000. Next, I was appointed as a PhD-fellow to conduct research on “The bioavailability of enterolignans and their relation to colorectal cancer and cardiovascular diseases”. This project was carried out at RIKILT in collaboration with the National Institute of Public Health and Environment (RIVM) and the Division of Human Nutrition, Wageningen University. I obtained my PhD degree in 2007. I continued my work as researcher at Wageningen University on a European Union funded project called “A study of the interaction of genetic and lifestyle factors on the incidence of type 2 diabetes” (InterAct). Within this project I was especially involved in the nutritional biomarkers and biomarkers of intermediate pathways (inflammation), and participated in several working groups on the relation between diet and type 2 diabetes. During an exchange program with Imperial College, London (2010), I worked on this topic further, which resulted in two additional publications. As co-promoter I was involved in a project on diet, inflammation and type 2 diabetes.
Currently, I'm involved in several projects. Two projects related to "Healthy and sustainable diets" (SUSFANS and SHARP-BASIC) and one project on "Consumer perspective towards healthy and sustainable diets" (VLAG-TKI-Alpro).
In addition, I am a lecturer and/or coordinator in several MSc courses (e.g., Analytical Epidemiology, and Public Health Practice) and guest lecturer in few other courses. So far, I successfully supervised more than 30 MSc and BSc students with their thesis projects.’
