Tensionless balanced Liquid/Liquid interfaces (Middle-phase microemulsions Winsor-III systems)

Supervisors: R. Varadharajan, F.A.M. Leermakers.

Microemulsions are optically isotropic, thermodynamically stable system of water, oil, and amphiphile [1] and have applications drug delivery, dry cleaners, pesticides, polishers, etc., Even though these systems are extensively studied, little has been known about their mesoscopic interfacial properties. The obstacle in understanding the interfacial properties arises from the fact that they can neither be directly measured through experiments nor from simulations. Simulations to predict mesoscopic properties takes extremely long order simulations (both in time and space). Recently we established a procedure to determine these bending rigidities of tensionless balanced microemulsions using SF-SCF model [2]. Concisely, the protocol exploits scale-invariant topologies to efficiently determine the bending rigidities.

As an extension of the work much has to be done to understand the effects of solvent. Further we would like to understand how to create balanced interfaces from asymmetric molecular compositions. Former involves using the established procedure to determine the rigidities by tuning parameters like solvent chain length, surfactant chain length and interaction parameter. Later involves innovative ideas to balance the interface in the presence of asymmetry in the system by tuning various parameters or by introduction of co-solvents (amphiphile’s with different molecular composition).

Requirements:

MATLAB or Python basics. Working knowledge in Latex environment is appreciated but not necessary. Understanding of Statistical mechanics, ensembles and thermodynamics are vital and expected from potential candidates.

Bilayer membrane analysis using SC-SCF.

R. Varadharajan, F.A.M. Leermakers

Similar to the microemulsions, the bending rigidities of bilayer membranes can also be unambiguously determined using scale-invariant surfaces. This work will be an extension to our previous works (The Journal of Chemical Physics 138, 154109 (2013); https://doi.org/10.1063/1.4801327, The Journal of Chemical Physics 140, 065102 (2014); https://doi.org/10.1063/1.4863994).

Above works use more indirect approaches to determine the bending rigidities. As an extension of the work, we would like to perform analysis of scale-invariant surfaces to prove consistency. We would like to model DOPC, DOPG bilayers for this purpose using SC-SCF(see above reference). Minimal Torus and Im3m phases should provide direct estimates of moduli.
