Tracking individual animals in groups
Livestock are kept in large groups, which makes tracking and monitoring of individual animals difficult. WUR researchers and Breed4Food partners (www.breed4food.com) are studying automated systems for individual tracking and monitoring of livestock, including for example radio frequency identification systems, automated video tracking systems, and accelerometers. The resulting data on individual animals can be used to monitor the health and welfare of the animals, and to define different phenotypes in the population, which provides input for breeding programmes. This is how WUR works on improving the quality of life of livestock.
