Biografie

I am an engineer and a researcher specialized in poultry physiology, nutrition, breeding, and welfare. I chose to progress in academic field related to poultry science to be able to specialize in this subject and contribute to sustainability, animal health, animal welfare, healthy food and to improve the quality of life.

In 2012, I graduated from Ege University – Faculty of Agriculture – Animal Science Department. My BSc thesis was: The past, present and future of incubators.

In 2016, I graduated from the same department and I received my MSc degree, specialised in “Broiler Breeding’’, “Incubation Management’’, “In-ovo Injection” and “Broiler Physiology”. My MSc thesis was: ‘‘The effects of in-ovo injection of leptin in broiler breeder eggs on incubation parameters and growth performance’’. During my MSc thesis, I focused on the effects of in-ovo injection on hatchability, embryonic mortality, chick quality, broiler body weight, feed and water intake, feed efficiency, and mortality.

In 2016, I got a scholarship from Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and Turkish Ministry of Education to perform a PhD abroad.

I started on January 2017 as a PhD candidate at Wageningen University and Research, Department of Animal Sciences, Adaptation Physiology Group in collaboration with Wageningen Livestock Research, Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality of the Netherlands, and eight poultry-associated commercial companies.

My PhD will continue until 2022 and is supervised by prof. dr. ir. Bas Kemp, dr. ir. Henry van den Brand, dr. ir. Marinus van Krimpen, dr. ir. Ingrid de Jong and dr. Roos Molenaar.

My research will focus on ''Healthy Bones for Broiler Chickens''.

Healthy Bones for Broiler Chickens

Skeletal problems are one of the most important problems affecting the health and welfare of broiler chickens. The causes of skeletal problems seem to be a combination of genetics, broiler and breeder nutrition, incubation conditions, infectious diseases and management factors.

How can we find feasible solutions?

In early 2017, an extended research, ‘‘Healthy Bones for Broiler Chickens’’, was launched in Wageningen University & Research collaboration with Wageningen Livestock Research and several project partners to investigate all those causes and to find some feasible solutions.

My research aims

  • to improve health and welfare,
  • to accomplish better and sustainable poultry rearing,
  • to reduce rejections at the slaughterhouse,
  • to increase return on investment

by optimizing leg and wing bone development of broiler chickens.

The scientific and societal viewpoints are to understand how those causes interact and affect bone development. When we understand how specific factors affect bone development, strategies can be applied that lead to better bone development in broilers resulting in an improved animal welfare, a better bone quality, lower mortality, less rejections and a higher return on investment of the poultry sector.

My project also aims to lead to more insight in bone development of broiler chickens, which probably can be used in other poultry species as well (layers, turkeys, quails) and development of the broiler sector towards a more sustainable level, related to animal health and welfare.
