Ulrika has more than 25 years' experience and thorough knowledge of aquatic ecology. Her expertise concerns monitoring and analyses of fish stocks, including methods for data-poor stocks, biotic interactions involving fish, as well as effects of human impacts and ecosystem changes in aquatic communities. In connection with the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD), Ulrika has worked with developing and applying methods for the assessment of ecological status using fish. She has substantial experience of counselling in management of fish stocks and inland fisheries to governmental and regional authorities, non-governmental organizations, and fishermen.

IRC Shrimp

Het project IRC Shrimp (OSW garnalen internationaal) bestaat uit een discardmonitoringsprogramma en een internationaal kennisuitwisselingsplatform. Zowel vanuit de MSC-certificering als vanuit de uitzondering op de aanlandplicht zijn er eisen wat betreft het verbeteren van de monitoring van bijvangst in de garnalenvisserij. Door het project IRC Shrimp wordt voldaan aan de eisen vanuit de MSC-certificering en kan de sampling uit het discardprogramma worden gevalideerd. Bovendien zijn er -in meerdere landen- onderzoeken gedaan waar nu niet optimaal gebruik van wordt gemaakt. Door de platformdagen is het de bedoeling om al bestaande kennis met elkaar te delen zodat nuttige innovaties sneller beschikbaar zijn voor de vloot.

The course deals with the management of human impacts on living renewable resources in marine, coastal and large freshwater ecosystems. The focus is on impacts on marine and freshwater ecosystems through fishing for food and income. But there are also direct and indirect impacts on and feedbacks from ecosystems as tourism, sport fishing, wind energy parks, conservation measures such as Marine Protected Areas and pollution. Effective management of the use of marine ecosystems requires a social–ecological systems approach to analyse problems arising from the interactions between the ecosystem and the decisions of resource users.
