Biografie

Daniel Wiegant studied Human Geography & Planning (honours) and Sustainable Development (cum laude) at Utrecht University, and the Advanced Master in International Development at the Radboud University, the Netherlands. Daniel has previously worked as a trainee at the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as landscape governance advisor at the Horn of Africa Regional Environment Centre & Network, and as a project manager at MetaMeta Research. He has research and work experience in Bolivia, Ecuador, Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa, Morocco and Nepal.

In 2018, Daniel started his PhD project with a fellowship from the Wageningen School of Social Sciences. He focuses on how national forest and landscape restoration targets are implemented at local level, the challenges that emerge in the implementation process, and the governance arrangements and strategies that restoration actors used to overcome these. The research draws on scale theory and different bodies of the governance literature. Key concepts are scale challenges and scale-sensitive governance.

The project is conducted in collaboration with the Consorcio para el desarrollo de la ecorregión andina (Condesan) in Quito, and the Water & Land Resource Centre (WLRC) in Ethiopia. The PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency and World Resources Institute have also provided support.
