Adaptive immune response to vaccination in Carp

 

Aquaculture is always threatened by many pathogens, including bacteria, fungi and viruses. One of these pathogens is Spring Viremia of Carp Virus (SVCV). This is a member of the Rhabdoviridae family that infect common carp and causes a very high mortality.

Fortunately, our group has developed a DNA-based vaccine against SVCV 1. This vaccine was 100% protective when used intramuscularly. However, the exact immunological mechanism underlying this protection was not fully defined. In my project I would like to study the adaptive immune response to this vaccine in common carp. Thereby, I would like to define the component(s) of the adaptive immune system which are responsible for this protection (correlates of protection). Defining correlates of protection will be beneficial in evaluating vaccine efficacy in vitro without exposing the fish to the natural virus to see if it is protected or not. Furthermore, since intramuscular vaccination is costly and labour-intensive, these information will be crucial for the design and evaluation of new vaccination strategies (Oral/ Mucosal Vaccination).
