Biografie

Barbara is an industrial engineer specialized in international timber trade and timber legality, who has been working on methods to curb illegal timber trade since 2013. Barbara holds a Masters in agronomy from São Paulo State University (UNESP) in Ilha Solteira, Brazil; a Masters in international timber trade from Ecole Supérieure du Bois in Nantes, France; and a Bachelors in Engineering, qualification in Wood Industry Engineering, from the Federal University of Parana in Curitiba, Brazil. Prior to joining Wageningen University as a PhD candidate, she had worked on forensic methods applied to timber tracing in the Brazilian Amazon and on timber legality in the Cameroonian domestic market. As a PhD candidate at Wageningen University, she will work on developing genetic tracing methods for highly important tropical timber species from Africa and Asia under the TIMTRACE project.

Projecten

An estimated 50-90 percent of the traded volume of tropical timber is illegally sourced. To implement new European legislation intended to eliminate this illegal trade, independent tools will be needed to verify the legal status of timber. TIMTRACE therefore propose to develop a fast, accurate and cost-effective commercial forensic tool for tracing the claimed origin of tropical timber.
