Dr Chiara Macchi is an Assistant Professor of Law and Coordinator of Education at Wageningen University & Research – Law Group.
She joined the Law Group in 2019 as Marie Sklodowska-Curie Researcher with a project on Business and Human Rights in the policies of the European Union.
She is an assistant editor of Transnational Environmental Law and co-chair of the Business and Human Rights working group of the Netherlands Network for Human Rights Research. She has authored publications on climate due diligence, extraterritorial human rights obligations, human rights due diligence legislation, the right to water, the trade-human rights link and the human rights responsibilities of investors.

She is author of the book: Macchi, C. (2022) ‘Business, Human Rights and the Environment: The Evolving Agenda’, Asser/Springer.

She is one of the founders and directors of the Summer School 'Business and Human Rights', taking place every year since 2018.

She was previously a post-doctoral researcher in International Law at the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies. She conducts consultancies for governments, NGOs, companies, trade unions and lawyers on business and human rights-related issues.

Dr. Chiara Macchi is involved as researcher in Work Package 3 of the Horizon Project REBALANCE - 'Rebalancing disruptivE Business of multinAtional corporation and gLobal value chAins within democratic and iNClusive citizenship processes', led by the University of Pisa and funded by the European Commission under the Call HORIZON-CL2-2021-DEMOCRACY-01. Dr. Chiara Macchi has led a project funded under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship of the EU Commission (2019-2021). The 2-year project, titled ‘The EU as a leading global actor in Business and Human Rights: Towards a coherent policy framework’ (BHR_EU), focused on the coherence of EU policies in the realm of business and human rights.
