Dr. Lolke Sijtsma has a background and training in microbiology and (marine) biotechnology and obtained his PhD in 1990 at the university of Amsterdam. He has been working at Wageningen Research, Food & Biobased Research for over 25 years. Lolke works as senior scientist and projectmanager in international (EU), national and industrial projects dealing with a wide range of large multidisciplinary biotechnological projects including algae production and processing (lipids, hydrocarbons, proteins) and industrial biotechnology. He was projectmanager/WP leader of, amongst others, the projects SPLASH, MIRACLES, AlgaePARC Biorefinery.  Since recently he participates as WP leader in the european project Model2Bio. He (co-)-authored over 60 scientific papers and 7 patents in the fields of microbial physiology, LC fatty acids, enzymatic processes, protein modification, peptides and marine biotechnology.

Since 2006 Lolke Sijtsma also is confidential counseler within the organisation.
